Drunk Mice Given 'Hangover' Pill And The Results Show Promise, Researchers Suggest

While drinking alcohol can be seen as a fun way to bring in the weekend, it could also be dangerous if excessively consumed. For people who enjoy alcoholic beverages but dread the hangover that may follow, there may be a solution.


Instead of taking ibuprofen to cure those horrible hangovers, a new pill has been created that could potentially cure it.

Signs Of A Hangover 

According to the Mayo Clinic, a hangover occurs after a person consumes too much alcohol. Though most hangovers go away on their own, they can last up to 24 hours. Signs a person may have a hangover include:
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Shakiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
A person should seek medical treatment if their skin turns blue or if they have low-body temperature. Statistically, eight in 10 visits to the emergency room in America are due to alcohol poisoning. 

The Hangover Pill

A team of researchers from the University of California decided to create an antidote that would not only allow people to drink and not have to worry about getting a hangover, but also to create a saver way for people to consume alcoholic beverages.
The team was led by Professor Yunfeng Lu, who is a chemical engineering professor at UCLA. The pill, which was filled with natural enzymes, was tested on lab mice. The enzymes are cells that are found in the liver and help a person's body process alcohol faster. This treatment could also be effective for preventing alcohol poisoning, which can sometimes be fatal.
Lu and his team first got the lab mice drunk, they then proceeded to give the mice the treatment. To protect the enzymes, they were wrapped in a shell using material that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved. The researchers then injected the nanocapsules into the veins of the mice.  
The team saw a 45 percent decrease in the blood alcohol levels in four hours. This was compared with the mice that weren't treated. The team also noted that the blood concentration of acetaldehyde, which is a highly toxic compound that makes a person throw up, in the mice that were treated remained low as well.

Could This Be The Cure?

Lu's research was created to help assist hospitals. Though the results seem very promising, Lu and his team stress that more research needs to be done before it can assume that the pill has no harmful side effects on humans.
Lu and his team are looking to begin tests on humans within a year.

Flesh-eating Bacteria May Have Killed Woman After Florida Vacation, Husband Suggests


A grandmother from Indianapolis may have died from flesh-eating bacteria after contracting it while she was on vacation in Florida.
Richard Martin told WRTV that his 50-year-old wife, Carol, had returned home from a vacation in Clearwater, Florida, in February with a nickel-sized infection on her buttocks. The infection became so unbearably painful that she sought medical care twice.
"They sent her home with more antibiotics and a heating pad, and it got worse," said Martin told the local news station.

An infection with S. pyogenes can cause strep throat, scarlet fever, impetigo, cellulitis, necrotizing fascitis, otitis media, sinusitis or meningitis. An Indianapolis man said his wife caught a flesh-eating bacteria during their vacation in Florida that may have caused her death. Getty Images

Carol was hospitalized after the treatments and antibiotics didn’t work. Doctors then realized she had necrotizing fasciitis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) described necrotizing fasciitis as a serious bacterial skin infection that can spread quickly throughout the body and kill body tissue. Symptoms of the flesh-eating bacteria—which include pain or soreness, red or purplish areas of swelling, ulcers, blisters and black spots on the skin—can be confusing but are quick to start. Later symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue and vomiting, according to the CDC.
"In the emergency room they said, 'We are sorry but she has a flesh-eating bacteria, we have to rush her to surgery right now,'" said Martin.
After two surgeries and 16 days in the intensive care unit, Carol was allowed to return home. She died the morning of May 5, Martin said.
"She made me lunch; I kissed her goodbye to go to work. I come home early in the morning and found her passed away," Martin told the local station. "We should have the answers and know why this went where it did."

Martin told WFLA-TV that he believed his wife contracted the bacterial disease from going into a hot tub at a Days Inn the couple stayed in during their vacation.
"She was the only one that got in the hot tub," he told the station.

What’s making the ocean glow blue at night at some California beaches?



Mike Glenn was on a mission to chase glowing, bright blue waves, a rare sight he witnessed a decade earlier and couldn’t pass up when he heard they had reappeared in San Diego.
So Glenn and his girlfriend Krista Hartin jumped in their car late Wednesday night on the hunt, driving from Newport Beach and stopping along the way to check Laguna Beach, with no luck.

It was about 10 minutes after passing Doheny State Beach in Dana Point that he saw a bright tint to the waves’ whitewash, and he knew he was getting closer.
Glenn was among countless eager spectators who made the midnight journey to the beach, with those who ventured to San Diego getting the best look at the illuminated waves, caused by red tide that, at night time, can cause the ocean to glow.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego announced the rare presence of the phenomenon Wednesday, and several media outlets spread the word.
The red tide is due to bioluminescent dinoflagellates that, when moved by water or waves, “glow neon blue at night,” according to the announcement.
Glenn said he found the best viewing in Oceanside and Carlsbad, at a secluded spot where people quietly watched with their car headlights turned off and without camera flashes ruining the moment. At about 2:30 a.m., knowing he had to be up by 6 a.m., he headed back to Newport Beach.
“It was absolutely amazing,” he said. “Going down there on an adventure to try and find glowing waves was definitely an experience I don’t think we’ll ever forget. And the reward for that was worth the lack of sleep I got that last night.”

Red tides

Red tides are unpredictable and not all of them produce bioluminescence. There is no red tide monitoring program, but the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps Oceanography performs weekly sampling for potential harmful algal toxins.
Scientists do not know how long the current red tide will last, as previous events have lasted anywhere from one week to a month or more. The sightings began Monday, May 7, and were observed from La Jolla to Encinitas.
Julianne Steers, Marine Biologist and Director of Husbandry for the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, said it’s very likely Orange County will see the red tide bloom that illuminated the ocean further south.
Steers said these kinds of tides are more common during spring and summer months, showing up when the weather warms.
According to Scripps biological oceanographer Peter Franks, the actual red tide is most visible during the day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
At midday, the photosynthetic organisms swim upward toward the light, creating a thin, dense layer near the surface. Circulation patterns create dense groups of the red tide organisms over the troughs of the waves.

The last time red tide was seen in the area was in 2013, according to Scripps.
Retired Doheny State Park ranger Jim Serpa said he’s seen red tide dozens of times through the years, sometimes lasting months.
He remembers one winter night in the mid-90s when a co-worker woke him up with a midnight phone call to check out the glowing water.
“It’s exploding everywhere. You can see fish swimming through the water like ghosts,” Serpa recalled his friend saying. He got up and the duo paddleboarded into the neon water.
“Every time we raked the water, paddling, it just exploded with this blue color. We’re sitting out there by the rock, we’re just seeing fish zoom by,” Serpa said. “It looks like you’re in outer space.”
Huntington Beach surfer Paul Torrealba remembers camping in 2012 at San Onofre State Beach and noticing the bright blue waves while out for a walk. He and his friends quickly grabbed their surfboards.
